May 7, 1959 - The Los Angeles Dodgers played an exhibition game against the New York Yankees at the L.A. Coliseum that drew a crowd of 93,103 with an additional 15,000 fans turned away. The game was played as a benefit for Roy Campanella.
A catcher by trade and one of the most popular Dodgers from the Brooklyn days, Campanella’s career had been cut short after he was paralyzed in an automobile accident shortly before the start of the 1958 season. A total of $60,000 ($551,000 in today’s money) was raised for the wheelchair-bound honoree.
My dad was there. What a game. What a night. What a memory.
